The phrase "canary in the coal mine" originates from a life-saving practice in mining, where canaries were used to detect toxic gases like carbon monoxide. This method was popularized by John Scott Haldane, who recommended using canaries in coal mines after an explosion in 1896. If the canary became sick or died, it served as an early warning sign for miners to evacuate due to dangerous gas levels .

This idiom has since evolved to describe any early indicator of potential danger.
